When considering where to plant roots, many are drawn to California for its renowned quality of life—which, according to recent rankings, comes in at an impressive 2nd place nationwide. Yet, these same rankings place the state 31st overall, 38th in safety, and, perhaps most notably for homebuyers and sellers, last in affordability. For comparison, Idaho and New Jersey received the highest marks, while New Mexico sits at the bottom.
